Live Rewind: Nada Surf at The Fillmore, 2.23.06

A month after Lifehouse, I attended the Nada Surf show at The Fillmore on February 23, 2006. Nada Surf is an established band who first hit it big in the mid-90s with their song "Popular". They have been releasing music and touring for over ten years and had released their album The Weight Is A Gift in 2005 and supported it throughout 2006. The band is comprised of lead singer and guitarist Matthew Caws, drummer Ira Elliot, and dreadlocked bass guitarist Daniel Lorca.

I invited Shyloe to the concert and she instantly became a fan of Nada Surf too. We arrived to another long line outside the venue which stretched well past the Fillmore station post office on Geary. They The long opener consisted of two acts: folk singer Inara George and Rogue Wave, a pretty good indie band from Oakland fronted by Zach Rogue.

I first discovered the band through a song on a random mixed CD from my friend Cat. After hearing "Inside Of Love" and the first single off The Weight "Always Love", I was hooked. Some of the memorable concert observations: the backdrop was very simplistic. There were six or seven circular mirrors positioned on stage that reflected the audience. It actually produced a pretty cool effect since we could see our energetic reflection against the band. Another amusing anecdote was bassist Daniel's chainsmoking throughout the concert, song after song. I thought for a moment, his dreads would catch on fire! Musically, Matthew Caws has an awesome live voice, which was showcased in the heartbreaking "Inside Of Love". One of my favorite songs performed that night was the high energy "Blankest Year" in which Matt sings "Oh Fuck it. Fuck it, yeah! I'm gonna have a party". Another notable song was "Concrete Bed". The band performed a generous set of song spanning their musical catalog. Towards the end of the concert when they finally began to play "Always Love", I called Cat so she could hear her favorite Nada song as a way of appreciation. You know, the cell phone is the 21st century's version of the bic lighter. Such a concert cliché.

What I love most about the Minnesota band Motion City Soundtrack is their upbeat, poppy sound that seems in complete contradiction to their oft-depressing and morbid lyrical content. But how refreshing is it to hear a MCS song that actually has a positive meaning! Having released their first unofficial single "Broken Heart" last summer, off their third studio album titled Even If It Kills Me, the power pop/punk rock band is set to release their next single, which will likely be "It Had To Be You". The lyrics are completely random, but strangely fit:

"Let's get wrecked on pop-tarts and sex
And see the Taj Mahal / Let's save birds from Prince William's sound and skateboard through the mall / Let's fight crime with mangos and limes and join the PGA"! LOL.

I'm digging it so far and I'm sure I'll be addicted to it very soon.

Live Rewind: Lifehouse at The Fillmore, 1.19.06

Spring semester of 2006, I invited my friend Bea to her first-ever rock concert post after spring training for my RA job wrapped up. Bea loves the music of Mariah Carey, so when it came to rock or alternative, it was a whole new world that I loved bringing to her. So it was great to start off the semester by seeing one of my favorite rock bands Lifehouse in concert at the Fillmore on January 19, 2006. Although I liked their massive first hit "Hanging By A Moment", it wasn't until I listened to their second major album Stanley Climbfall that I became a true fan, since it was one of the few albums I religiously played all the time and thoroughly enjoyed song by song.

This was my first concert at The Fillmore on Geary and the venue is slightly larger than The Great American Music Hall and smaller than the Warfield. It was at this concert, I was still able to feel close to the band, yet there were more people enjoying the music. Lifehouse was supported by a funky singer-songwriter named MoZella who among her brief set performed a song called "Amnesia". Lifehouse came out and immediately started playing songs from their most recent self-titled album such as "Blind", "Spin", and "You & Me".

Concert experiences are very interesting, because they never are the same. In this case, I remember Bea pointing a couple who was displaying PDA prior to the opening and a rush of people pushing to the front. Although I could do without the pushing and the unnecessary tension caused by such, and knock on wood I have not dealt with issues inovlving body odor, I prefer standing during concerts than sitting. And here we were, singing along to hits like "Take Me Away" or the fantastic "Sick Cycle Carousel". The performance that gave me goosebumps was for the song "Everything", where frontman Jason Wade plows through that power ballad with a lot of heart.

With the amps at full blast, every person was at their feet jumping, singing, and screaming in unison to the words of "Hanging By A Moment" during the final encore. It is truly difficult to describe how I felt at that moment. It was simply a pure high. I had a great time that night.

Signed to the Fueled By Ramen family, this band is fronted by a female -- but it's not the band you may be thinking of. The Hush Sound is led by Greta Salpeter and their sound is a blend of indie, funk, folk, and rock with the added twist given by the use of the piano. Their second album Like Vines was co-produced by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump and featured "Wine Red" as the lead single. They will be on tour in the spring in preparation of their March 18, 2008 release of Goodbye Blues. Take a listen to this refreshingly different (read: very good) song..and of course, get the album!

Live Rewind: Matt Nathanson at the Great American Music Hall, 11.11.05

Three days after seeing Jason Mraz, I attended what would be one of my favorite concerts to date.

I discovered singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson through a combination of the now-defunct Mytunes and Amazon.com and instantly connected with his EP When Everything Meant Everything. Although his first major label album, Behind These Fireworks seemed a bit more unnecessarily polished, Matt still proves he has the star quality and talent needed for a breakthrough. His blend of instantly catchy pop-rock hooks, emotion and cynicism, and memorable lines like "I can still smell summer on your skin / I can still remember giving in, wrapped all up in your hips and in your sheets". But Matt Nathanson on CD is nothing compared to Matt Nathanson live, in concert, plugged or unplugged.

The opening acts were Kate Earl and Matt Wertz whose performance for the song "Everthing's Right" I especially enjoyed.

If it could be possible, Matt was better live than his recordings, since he is such an unlikely enigmatic, charismatic and ridiculously candid musician. He doesn't simply perform songs. He offers anecdotes on his personality and life as he prefaces his performances. And boy does he pique people's attention by using intermittent profanity throughout the night. Matt has such a potty mouth, but it is never used in a vulgar, demeaning way of course. It just added to the ridiculousness of stories and past loves behind many of his introspective songs.

Among my favorite performances that night were: "Lucky Boy", "Sad Songs", and the encore song where he sang a haunting acoustic version of "Suspended" right up-close with the audience.

After the show, my tag-along concert buddy Lizzy told me to employ a strategy she has perfected in the past in her attempts to meet the band or artists post-show. She shared that patience proved fruitful during her days at Hanson concerts. But laugh not, her method worked. After waiting several minutes outside the venue, a smattering of Matt fans gathered with a hope of doing an unoffical meet-and-greet. When I finally spoke with Matt, I remember telling him that I really ejoyed his music, like any fan-dork and he graciously posed for a few photos and autographed my copy of his album cover. It was an awesome moment that capped a great concert!

Not very many Israelis top the American music charts -- let alone get any airplay. However, Yael Naim can thank Apple's marketing team for using her song "New Soul" in an ad for their new MacBook Air laptop. Since its debut on television, the song has received networthy buzz on the web and has reached #1 on iTunes' Top 100 Downloads chart. Not bad for a French-born, Israeli-bred, and Tunisian-raised lass who has yet to physically release her debut album in the states.

Live Rewind: Jason Mraz at the Warfield - November 8, 2005

Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz has a knack for witty, sunny lines and literally played with words like in the appropriately titled "Wordplay". After releasing his sophomore album Mr. A-Z, Jason toured the country with opening acts Tristan Prettyman (Jason's then-girlfriend and a model for Roxy) and an unknown British singer by the name of James Blunt. All three came to San Francisco to play a show at the Warfield on November 8, 2005.

We had really good spots during the concert. There was, of course, a massive push in an attempt to get to the front by some fanatical guys with a sign, but we stood our ground -- literally. Another interesting thing that night: someone was smoking (and passing) a joint in the audience. At a Jason Mraz concert. Wow.

One highlight was the duet between Prettyman and Jason. The two certainly had chemistry that night. Another was discovering James Blunt, who sang a few hits from his debut Back To Bedlam including "You're Beautiful". I remember this one chick singing in a god-awfully off-key voice to every song. She was a massive annoyance. People around me were wondering who the heck she was and why she knew the songs of this 'unknown'...little did we know...

Hailing from our neighbor to the north, The Midway State is a band from Ontario, Canada who released an EP titled Met A Man On Top Of The Hill in 2007. Led by curly-haired singer Nathan Ferraro, his chilling vocals are perfect for their piano-driven rock songs. Americans had a taste of their music when a version of their song "Unaware" (another good song) was played during the finale of "The OC". The band finished 2007 by opening for Daughtry and now they are the opener for Mika for his winter tour. They are definitely a band in pursuit of a breakthrough in 2008...

Live Rewind: Aqualung - Great American Music Hall, 09.20.05

In anticipation for two concerts I am attending next week, I will be counting down the days with a blog entry each day dedicated to a concert experience I've had in SF.

My first concert in the city was Aqualung a.k.a. Matt Hales, the British wonderkund who came to play a show at the Great American Music Hall in SF way back on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. The opening act was indie singer-songwriter Tracy Bonham. I shared the experience with my pals David, Lara, and Simmy. We originally got dinner seats but realized post-dinner that they sucked offered a poor view, so after eating our overpriced ravioli and salad, Simmy and I scurried down to the floor to get a closer view, where we bumped into two other friendly faces, Cat and Melissa! Matt delivered heartfelt, emotional performances. The highlight was certainly Matt singing "Brighter Than Sunshine". GAMH was a perfect sized venue for Matt since it wasn't large enough to lose any sense of intimacy.

You know the rock band Augustana from their hit piano rock ballad "Boston". I was fortunate enough to see the band perform live during in the fall of 2006. They were the opening act for Snow Patrol. Now they are set to release a new album this May 6 titled Can't Love, Can't Hurt and they just released their first single, a song called "Sweet And Low" on their Myspace page. Take a listen. It has Augustana's signature sound and I'm loving it!

British pop & R&B popstar Leona Lewis, winner of the UK television reality competition The X Factor (a second-coming of Britain's Pop Idol of sorts, sold a million copies of her debut album Spirit and is hoping to find crossover success in the United States. Her first single "Bleeding Love" was proclaimed as the UK's #1 song of 2007 and will be released to radio this month. The stateside release of Spirit is April 8 through J Records.

Here is the new US version of "Bleeding Love" video which was filmed at Times Square in New York City.

What the heck is 'Friss Zene'?!

Happy 2008!

It's a new year and it's a new blog! Just this past week, I had the daunting task of transfering all of the past 28 weeks worth of the Earworm Top 40 charts from my the Myspace blog to its new home on blogger.

Now you may be wondering: What the heck is 'Friss Zene'? No, I haven't gone Hungarian (I am very much an English-speaking Fil-Am). I studied abroad in Hungary and picked up a few bits of the language during my stay there.

Friss (pronounced "freesh") = fresh and zene (pronounced "zaynuh", I think) = music.

It seemed like a fitting title since my goal of this blog is to feature the top new music I've discovered and am listening to.

Another thing I hope to implement on this blog is to write more and add more content (vids, dls, lyrics) relating to fresh new music or artists you should be listening to! Although my choices are leaning toward the mainstream, I'd be happy to hear what indie artists and bands you are digging too!

So keep coming back and treat yourself to some friss zene!
